On a 5-kilometre front in the northern French Flanders, British, Indian, and Canadian troops advanced only one kilometre in ten days, at the cost of 16,000 casualties. The attack of May 18, mainly carried out by units of the Canadian 1st Division, took place during a torrential downpour. Soldiers died in the flooded trenches.
