Siam’s opportunism

Although Siam (today, Thailand) was not involved in the main issues, it entered the war on the Allied side on this day. In exchange for a small expeditionary force sent to fight in Europe, it hoped to be among the victors who would sign the Treaty of Versailles and found the League of Nations – a considerable boost to Siam’s standing internationally. Its army also took advantage of the country’s participation to seize German vessels.
