Also called the Third Battle of Ypres or the Second Battle of Flanders by historians, the Battle of Passchendaele pitted British and Canadian troops, supported by French and Belgian reinforcements, against the German Fourth Army. The Allies’ ultimate goal was to reach Bruges, located 50 kilometres from the front, where the dreaded German U-boats were harboured.
