The German 8th army under General von Hindenburg stopped the headlong advance through East Prussia by the Russian 2nd army at Tannenberg (today, Stebark in Poland). A week later, slightly to the northeast, the Russian 1st army was defeated at the Masurian Lakes by General Ludendorff. These two Russian armies, numbering 400,000 men each, fought a German army of only 200,000. The German victory was crushing: the Russians lost almost 80,000 men, 93,000 were taken prisoner, and the rest fled. The Germans lost only 5000 men, and 7000 men were wounded.
