At Boezinge, in the midst of the battle for Flanders, John McCrae, a soldier originally from Guelph, Ontario, wrote the best-known poem of the First World War, “In Flanders Fields”, in twenty minutes. It first appeared in the British magazine, Punch, in December, 1915. The poem inspired the tradition of wearing a red poppy in Great Britain and the former Dominions on Remembrance Day.
