Formed as part of the British Army at the end of the 18th century, the Newfoundland Regiment is one of the oldest in the New World. The soldiers of the regiment were given their nickname of Blue Puttees at the beginning of the war, when, due to a scarcity of the regulation khaki fabric, blue broadcloth was used for the leg-bands of their uniforms.
