On the morning of this day, 15,000 Canadian soldiers launched the attack on Vimy Ridge, a point that was fortified by the Germans, enabling them to dominate the immediate area and hold off the Allies. This was the only attack of the war made simultaneously by all four infantry divisions of the Canadian Corps. Out of 30,000 soldiers, 3,598 died and over 10,000 were wounded. The exemplary attitude of the Canadian troops during the three days of the attack was hailed by all and was an important factor in Canada’s emergence from Great Britain’s shadow.
