Gavrilo Princip, a student anarchist belonging to Young Bosnia, a group supported by Serbian nationalists, assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in an act of vengeance for the annexion of this region during the Balkan Wars. Even if the killing of Archduke Franz Ferndinand and his wife, Sophie Chotek. was considered a minor event, it triggered an infernal politial and military chain of events that led to the First World War.
