The Battle of the Yser and the First Battle of Ypres were the last two major battles in the war of movement, fought by the opposing sides in Flanders, as the action edged towards the North Sea. The Allies managed to contain the German advance, and the front was at a standstill. The soldiers stopped moving and burrowed into the earth.
