A French munitions ship, the Mont-Blanc, collided with the Norwegian relief vessel en route for Belgium, the Imo, at the entrance to the harbour of Halifax, Nova Scotia. A subsequent explosion killed 1630 people and wounded 9000. This major disaster in Canadian history held the record for the most powerful man-made explosion until the first nuclear bomb tests.
