On April 1, after several days of anti-conscription demonstrations and disorder, four men were killed and 70 people wounded after troops opened fire on a crowd in Quebec City. Five soldiers were also wounded. An inquiry revealed that the victims who were shot were passersby who did not participate in the demonstration.
