The Battle of Ancre Heights

Irina Gaber . . .

The 4th Canadian Division took Regina trench, the longest German trench and one of the enemy’s strongest defensive positions. This was one of the last actions of the Battle of the Somme, which ended two days later, with a count of more than 420,000 victims among the Germans and 620,000 among the Allied soldiers, including 24,029 Canadians. The international press unanimously praised the essential role played by the “Van Doos”, the nickname of the Royal 22nd 22 Regiment of Quebec City, in the final victory.
