Romania was a Triple Alliance ally with a strongly francophile population and had succeeded in remaining neutral until this day, when, in Bucharest, it signed a commitment to fight on the Allied side, in hopes of recovering Transylvania from Austria-Hungary, as well as other territories across its border with the Balkans to the south.
