Following the first Chantilly Conference of December 1915, a meeting between the Allies to coordinate their actions, General Joffre for the French and General Haig for the British agreed on a plan for a joint attack on both sides of the Somme River. On this day, at the second Chantilly meeting, the date for the beginning of the offensive, July 1, was decided. This battle would last until mid-November, resulting in huge casualties that included 24,029 Canadians killed or wounded.
