The 18,000 men of the 1st Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force crossed the English Channel to a base at Saint-Nazaire. They would soon join the other Allied troops in Flanders. On February 26, the 14th Battalion (Royal Montreal Regiment) was the first to leave for the Belgian lines near Neuve-Chapelle.
