The first Canadians at the front

Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry was the first Canadian regiment to be immersed in the Hell of the war. Equipped and financed by Montreal millionaire Andrew Hamilton Gault, it was named in honour of Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Governor-General of Canada, the Duke of Connaught, and granddaughter of Queen Victoria. The Princess Patricias lost their first men at Ypres.
