Beaumont-Hamel, the deadliest attack

The British attack at Beaumont-Hamel in the Somme caused 57,550 casualties in one day, the highest loss of the war. Only 68 of the 800 soldiers of the Newfoundland and Labrador Regiment returned to the lines. The tragedy is commemorated on this date in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Canadian Corps joined combat at the Somme in September. 25,000 Canadian soldiers would lose their lives in the battle, representing 24% of the combat force.
